On November 27, 2018 SSGT Elchin was killed by an improvised explosive device in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. Capt. Andrew Patrick Ross and Sgt. 1st Class Eric Michael Emond also died in the same incident. Elchin was assigned to the 26th Special Tactics Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico.
